Resource Recycling Technologies Ltd (RRT) scrap metal facility is the largest privately owned scrap metal recycler in the South Island. RRT processes seven million tonnes of recyclable materials per year, which can then be sustainably reused and kept out of the waste stream.
Stormwater runoff from metal storage and processing poses risk to the Ōpāwaho/ Heathcote River from heavy metals and hydrocarbon contamination.
e2Environmental was commissioned to design a stormwater treatment solution capable of removing dissolved copper, lead and zinc from the stormwater. With traditional filters removing less than 30%, e2Environmental settled on electro-coagulation (EC) treatment. The EC removes around 95% dissolved copper, and 75% to 97% dissolved lead and zinc.
e2Environmental together with a partner company silt0, designed and consented the treatment system. It consists of a fully automated containerised treatment system for removal of heavy metals and suspended solids. Stormwater flows first into pre-treatment storage tanks, then through an EC reactor. Metal ions are generated and the contaminants in solution form a floc which then settles out in a clarifier.
