Construction Engineering support for the Margaret Mahy Family Playground, Christchurch
Description: The Margaret Mahy Family Playground is Christchurch’s premier play area. Covering 3500 square meters of an earthquake damaged block in the city centre, the playground comprises separate activity zones for different ages and is one of the largest playgrounds in the Southern Hemisphere.
Our expertise: e2environmental were brought into this project when it was behind schedule with the Contractor already on site. We provided highly motivated staff to assist our client interpreting the existing design, resolving site issues and managing redesign work as and where required. This included the complete redesign of the Armagh St stormwater and pavement levels as a result of service clashes not identified in the original design. Our staff interpreted and re-worked the original levels and drainage designs addressing site issues and providing workable buildable solutions. We took ownership of the project programme, proactively engaging the client and Contractor, ensuring that decisions were made in a cost effective and timely manner, as well as managing the delivery of information using a rolling programme to assist bring the project back on track and ensure no further delays were encountered
Outcome: Our staff successfully resolved both site and design issues within tight time frames, receiving praise from our client for their efforts. This project was successfully brought back on programme and the playground opened on time on 22 December 2015. The playground has proved to be a hugely popular addition to Christchurch City.
